Pop Art Fashion

Lately the “pop art” trend in fashion has gotten more widespread and this can be seen at trendy shops like H&M, Forever 21 and even textile shops and homeware shops. This trend comes to us from the world of comics and animation and has undoubtedly been hurried along by the “street fashion”, “geek chic” and “hipster” trends which have contributed patterns and imagery ranging from moustaches to clocks and owls and geeky glasses. And just in case you don’t find this trend self-explanatory, click here for an elaboration on the topic. One of the world’s most famous pop artists was Andy Warhol and one of his most famous works is a simplified Marilyn Monroe in which she appears several times in contrasted, exaggerated colour. Back to the topic at hand, pop art fashion tends to deal with busy patterns which grab a ton of attention, meaning it’s very important to know how to properly use it in order to not look messy, loud, and sloppy. Here are a few outfits which I chose to showcase the trend.

In this outfit, for example, I’ve chosen a black tank top with an image of popular cartoon character Homer Simpson holding a barrel of beer. I paired this with my boyfriend jeans, and the combo gives off a casual look, influenced by both street fashion and pop art. Finally I wore leopard print shoes in order to give the whole outfit some more texture, which, along with the red lipstick, makes it all a little more chic.

This next look is a more geeky one, giving off light pop art fashion vibes. I started this outfit from the pants which sport a large Betty Boop patch. To this I added a Batman beanie. The two main colours, red and yellow, feature heavily in both comic books and pop art so I kept the rest of the outfit rather neutral. I wore a two toned shirt, black and gray, tones that play nice with the rest of the colours in the outfit, as well as a pair of Burgundy heels, the colour of which goes well with the red.

This next look is very loud, it screams comic books and pop art. I sewed the skirt in the picture myself. This is a high waisted skirt with a comic book-y/pop art-y pattern. I paired it with a little black lace top with a smaller black top underneath to leave some skin showing, strengthening and emphasising the waist. Finally I wore my Burgundy heels again, along with red lipstick, to go with the yellow of the skirt and represent the red and yellow motifs of the comic book world.

The last outfit I chose is once again a loud one, thanks to the comic book top with strong highlighter colours. The top is large and wide so I tucked it in. The pants add to the scribbly look as they too are “busy” with a starry pattern and various rips giving them street fashion vibes. I added some “glam” to the outfit with my gray oxford shoes with shiny crystals at their tips giving the casual look some character, and a matching necklace.
